Airmail envelopes have a rich and celebrated history In the past, international mail used to be transported by sea and then by air on at least one leg of its journey. Airmail service officially began in May 1918, toward the end of World War I, and the US Army piloted the airplanes used to transport that mail. Within a few months, the Post Office Department took full control of the Air Mail Service and began using their own pilots. In the years to follow, commercial operators flew mail under government contracts, establishing transcontinental routes along the way.
