Airmail envelopes have a rich and celebrated history
In the past, international mail used to be transported by sea and then by air on at least one leg of its journey. Airmail service officially began in May 1918, toward the end of World War I, and the US Army piloted the airplanes used to transport that mail. Within a few months, the Post Office Department took full control of the Air Mail Service and began using their own pilots. In the years to follow, commercial operators flew mail under government contracts, establishing transcontinental routes along the way. One of the private contractors employed was Federal Express (FedEx), which designed a shipping system exclusively for shipping cargo by aircraft.
Although the days of Air Mail Service are long gone, the United States Postal Service formally trademarked the name “Air Mail” in June 2006. The classic airmail-style envelope is still very popular to this day. Airmail envelopes often featured a colored border depending on which country the letter came from. Envelopes from the United States or United Kingdom, for example, had a red and blue border due to the design of each national flag. The color scheme and design of these envelopes made it easier during mail separation and identification.
With the rapid growth of eCommerce businesses and stores, international shipping is at an all-time high. The USPS partnered with FedEx to create Global Express Guaranteed, a fast-international shipping service to over 190 countries and counting in just one to three business days. You can now collect airmail for decorative use or use it to give letters and invitations a distinctive look.
